Abu Musa Residential Complex
Abu Musa Residential Complex- National Architectural Competition
The Liva Complex is a multifaceted social hub that draws inspiration from the delicate historical roots of Abu Musa Island, relying on its climate and environmental characteristics. Like an integrated fabric, it weaves together the threads of individual life with the strands of communal living, ensuring that public spaces do not encroach upon private areas or the privacy of the residents. The logic behind the architectural structure of the complex is in harmony with the Island’s challenging climatic conditions, featuring a hybrid geometry:
– The Forms are derived from the indigenous architecture of the southern region, with a modern, minimalist approach that interconnected in a lush, branching network, recessed and protruding to ensure user’s comfort.
– The focal point of this logical structure are the organic forms erected to harness the potential of the region’s climatic conditions.
138 residential units are facing the sea and they are equipped with indigenous, climate-adaptive architectural elements, stretching across the east-west axis. Service, recreational and commercial spaces traverse the residential section along the north-south axis, ensuring homogeneous access to spatial amenities for all residents. The most notable feature of the service axis is its strong emphasis on climatic elements, designed to provide shaded spaces and collect rainwater simultaneously. Thus, the service axis functions as a shared water reservoir, centrally located within the residential section to enable integrated water distribution throughout the area. Climatic approaches can reduce the costs of providing user comfort, in a very significant way. In this regard, shading surfaces, colonnades and shenashils (traditional wind-catching structures) play a key role in defining the spatial structure of the complex, facilitating natural airflow without disrupting the natural landscape or violating residents’ privacy. Additionally, considering the predominant lifestyle of southern cities’ residents, who utilize semi-open spaces for cooking and social gatherings, the prioritization of closed, semi-open and open spaces has been carefully considered in both public and private areas. The focal point of the spatial arrangement, is an open-air amphitheater located at the center of the complex, serving as a platform for fostering social connections. Here, theatrical performances, local music, and communal prayers bring residents together. “Liva” is the name of one of the oldest musical forms of Hormozgan province. The resonance of Liva begins from the heart of the complex, from the amphitheater stage, and extends the forms of coexistence across the soil of Abu Musa to the shores of the sea.
