Meloran School

The main goal is to create a sense of place in the design of a school for Baloch girls, in line with their needs

A school whose mission is to create a safe, dynamic and vibrant space for the education of students who will the shape the future of this land. A complex that, while creating an educational place with the presence of teachers and coaches for the academic education of high school girls, is considered a gathering place for girls and a place for their socialization. Therefore, its coordination with the climate of the region, culture, and unique features will be effective factors in increasing the desire to be present in this space.

Place, as the object of the process of the attachment to the place, is considered very important from a physical and social aspect and the user behavior originates from its environment and the place she is in. The public and private space, visible place, details (materials, shape, texture and color) are the physical factors in creating a sense of place that, with an appropriate utilization, will have a significant impact on creating a sense of belonging and attachment, which ultimately improves the performance of students from an educational and social perspective. This issue is seen in the design of the school on a smaller scale and also in the volumetric division and separation of school courtyards based on age group. In addition to this, the color coverage and colors used in the school design are in line with neighboring buildings, which leads to creating a pleasant sense of familiarity and closeness with the design

The design has been inspired by the residential texture and the volumetric composition of the neighboring village, the historical village of Qaleh Now-e, due to its special type of architecture and usage of traditional materials. The rhythm and the geometry that are used in handicrafts and Baluchi needlework patterns are seen in the school design in the form of alternating arches and vaults, which play an important role in creating a sense of familiarity and coordination of the existing building with the art and culture of Baluchestan.

The volumetric composition is based on the determined 40% occupancy level, and the blocks are located with a 30-degree rotation relative to the north to prevent direct sunlight from hitting the mentioned building. The lattice considered in the building and the volumetric combination is such that it allows for natural ventilation and creates wind corridors.

Considering the capacity of climate friendly materials, the usage of these materials is effective in preserving heat and cold in the design of the school building and in reducing the ancillary costs of cooling and heating systems. In this design, the use of modern material in the form of a three-dimensional sandwich panel with a concrete cover is suggested, which is ultimately completed with a final cover of artificial nano straw-clay mortar.

Ultimately, the main emphasis of this design is on the existential importance of Meloran Girls’ High School, as a symbol of the second home of Baloch girls as well as the manifestation of the identity of the region’s residents, that while it is in line with time, it also reveals newer thoughts from a physical perspective and has evolved with the latest changes.
